Penguins Swimming Club is based in Armidale
at the University
of New England heated
indoor pool. For three months in the summer, the club transfers to the
Monkton Aquatic Centre which consists of two 50 metre
outdoor heated pools.
The club was formed in 1982 and has a current membership of 60. Catering for
all standards, the club competition nights are held on Friday evenings with a
computer grading system dividing swimmers into six groups. These groups,
Chicks, Rockhoppers, Adelies, Whiteflippers,
Emperors and Kings, are further subdivided into graded heats.
Each year the club holds two carnivals, a sprint carnival in June and a
distance carnival in November, with most events being divided into single age
groups. The sprint carnival is held at the UNE heated indoor pool and in
1998, for the first time, the long distance carnival was held in the Monkton
Aquatic Centre's heated 50 metre
outdoor pool.
Several of the club's swimmers have gone from the young ranks up to State and
the Age Nationals, with swimmers having represented in all strokes at varying
distances. A group of the club's swimmers have also progressed through the
ranks to represent at Open National level including Olympic, Commonwealth
Games, Pacific Games and World Championship trials. Penguin swimmers have
gained numerous medals at State and Country Championships and have held
several State titles.
Coaching and training squads are held Monday to Wednesday and Friday at 5.45
am and in the afternoon at times which vary with standard. The club coach is Cynthia Harwood and swimmers requiring coaching
should contact the Harwood
